Dear Parents,
This is to let you know that there are two new daily homework requirements.
1) Students now all have a daily word problem. This is a simple math problem expressed in everyday English which helps students work on their problem-solving, critical thinking and math skills. This should not take students more than two or three minutes and it is a great mental exercise for them.
2) Students have a vocabulary book. I am setting the new expectation that they fill in at least one word per night. They are encountering so many new words every day, and it is critical that they work hard to retain this vocabulary. By keeping a regular vocabulary book, students will deepen their understanding of the words we are learning in class.
One word per night (seven words per week) should only take them 5 minutes. However, they shouldn't rush this. I want them to use good definitions from a dictionary and use the words in a sentence that is meaningful and relevant to how the word was used in class.
These two new things should not add a lot to their homework load, and they are very important. Thank you so much for your support.
As always, if you have any concerns about your child's workload (too little or too much), let me know and I will work with you to make it appropriate. I believe in a good study/life balance.
Regards,
Mr. Matthews
