Dear Grade 5'ers, Welcome to another biweekly newsletter. We are hard at work on our inquiry, and getting lots of work done. Students have been presenting their research into famous explorers, sparking great conversations about the "Age of Exploration". We have started our look into "Force and Motion". Students have been working on the writing process, and improving their persuasive writing assignment. In Math, we have commence our look into division and exploring alternative methods of tackling division problems. As an extension of our look into cell biology and to further our study of chemical reactions, we did a small experiment with one of the most amazing single-cell organisms that humans have learned to use to their advantage, yeast! We learned that yeast comes in many varieties and has been used by humans for thousands of years, even though we only truly learned that yeast existed in the 1800s. | Jackie tried to get in on the spirit of Crazy Hair Day |
We observed that some yeast perform the following chemical reaction;
C6H12O6 (Sugar) ====> 2CH3CH2OH (Ethanol) + 2CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

| Healthy Sharks Snack Bar Friday, March 7th saw the first ever "Healthy Sharks Snack Bar". The Lower School Student Council organised for healthy foods to be put on sale during the morning recess. It was an outstanding success, with all food sold out! Congratulations Lower School Student Council. Oh, and in case you were wondering, it was also the QISS School Spirit "Crazy Hair Day" |
ASAP Session 3 begins The 3rd After School Activity Program session started last week. Some of the students from grade 5 joined in the fun in the "Paper Airplane Airforce" held in the Grade 5 classroom on Friday afternoon. We made the famous Nakamura Lock airplane. If you are interested in making one yourself, here are the instruction;

Last Lower School Assembly for 2013 - 2014 Academic Year
Tuesday was a half-day for students, ending with the final Lower School Assembly for the 2013-2014 academic year. In the assembly we celebrate students birthdays for the rest of the school year (it was a big group!) and saw performances showing the remaining two ESLR's, Vitality and Intelligence. Two of our students, Si Woong and Diana, sang a song with the rest of Ms. Ruth's ELL group.
